MMS update: May 2023

The Mobile Medical Support (MMS) team hosted a clinic at the Welcome Centre Shelter on May 6th before taking a brief pause in operations to restructure the program to best meet your healthcare needs. During that time, we’ve kept busy!

Oneday Dreams

Oneday Dreams serves Canadian adults living with a terminal illness by facilitating end-of-life dreams that offer joy, inspiration, and comfort while focusing on life and living. This organization strives to reach medically eligible adults in Canada who are at least 18 years of age, have a life expectancy of one year or less, and lack the resources or finances to achieve the dream on their own.

In 2017, local hospice social worker Mike Bennett and talent agent Jason Soulliere created Oneday Dreams to help Canadians fulfill their dreams. Together, and with the support of the community, they made their own dreams of bringing people beautiful moments of life and joy, a reality, OneDay Dreams is a registered charity in Windsor/Essex and fulfills dreams across Canada. Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare’s Withdrawal Management Services opens new intensive beds

WINDSOR, ON– In June of 2022, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare (HDGH) shared news of new investments for Addictions Services for our community.

One of these investments is funded by the province through the Addictions Recovery Fund to support the new Intensive Bed-Based Addiction Services initiative in HDGH’s Withdrawal Management Services (WMS) program. The one-time funding will support the initiative in 2022/23 and 2023/24 fiscal years.

This Intensive Bed-Based Addiction Services initiative will see the opening of two designated intensive beds in our already established residential WMS program and will help individuals 16 years or older seeking support to withdraw from substance dependency, including alcohol.

WMS is an essential part of the addiction care pathway and is a natural access point for those seeking treatment where individuals are linked with other longer-term forms of treatment and support services. There are circumstances where an individual can be supported to withdrawal in the community, and other scenarios where it would be best to withdrawal in a 24/7 supervised setting, with or without intensive monitoring.

The symptoms associated with substance withdrawal can be severe, and timely access to specialized care and medications can help address these symptoms, avoid Emergency Room visits, and largely influence an individual’s overall efficacy with addiction treatment and recovery goals.

Referrals are now being accepted into the Intensive Bed-Based Addictions Services program. Referrals into HDGH’s WMS are accepted through self-referral, through community partner organizations or from the Emergency Department by calling WMS Centre at 519-257-5225 for bed availability and admission eligibility. The WMS team will determine which service – Intensive Bed-Based Addiction Services, supervised Withdrawal Bed, or Community outreach WMS – is the most appropriate in collaboration with the client and partner agency, if applicable.

It is through these new initiatives of providing the right care, in the right ways, to the clients who need it most that HDGH continues to work with community partners to strengthen the depth and breadth of local services as a Centre of Excellence for Mental Health and Addiction.

Health811 –Connecting to care made easy

Knowing where to turn for health information can be confusing. To support Ontarians in their journey to access the right care at the right time, Health811 is here to help.

Previously known as Health Connect Ontario, which replaced Telehealth Ontario, Health811 is a free, secure and confidential service Ontarians can call or access online 24 hours a day, seven days a week to receive health advice from qualified health professionals, such as registered nurses, locate local health services and find trusted health information.

Health811 features one website: Ontario.ca/Health811 (also available in French: Ontario.ca/Sante811) and one number to call: 811 (TTY: 1-866-797-0007).

Health811 features:

  • 24/7 access to live support via telephone or online chat.
  • The telephone service is available in over 200 languages, including Indigenous languages such as Cree, Ojibwe and Inuktitut.
  • Free access to health professionals, such as registered nurses, registered dieticians, lactation consultants and smoking cessation coaches.
  • Provides support for those searching for information about mental health and addictions.
  • An online health services directory that enables Ontarians to find health services and health care providers by keyword, location or postal code.
  • An artificial intelligence-powered symptom assessment tool that guides users through a series of questions to suggest possible reasons for their symptoms and provides care options, as well as a downloadable symptom report.
  • An online medical library that consists of curated content created by experienced doctors and medical safety experts. Ontarians can also call Health811 to receive a free FIT for colorectal cancer screening, get assistance finding a family physician or nurse practitioner accepting new patients, connect to the Refugee HealthLine and more.

Health811 is for non-urgent health questions and concerns only and is not a substitution for 911, which should still be used for a medical emergency. This

service is also not a replacement for regular touchpoints with health care providers.

Any references to Health Connect Ontario, such as website links, will be automatically redirected to Health811 to ensure continuity of service.

WECHU’s Healthy Families: Programs and services

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit offers programs for prenatal women, new parents, and parents of young children.

The Healthy Families department at the Health Unit offers multiple programs and services to local families from preconception until the child enters school. All programs are FREE to residents of Windsor-Essex County and can be accessed directly by clients or by community referral.

Lactation Consultation Services

Certified Lactation Consultants provide women with specialized, one-on-one support for breastfeeding challenges. Support is available via virtual meeting, over the phone, or in the client’s home.

18 month Developmental Follow-up

Registered Nurses review the results of the 18 month LookSee developmental screen with parents and provide practical recommendations for parents to help their child reach the associated milestones. Nurses link parents with other community resources, as needed.

Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes

Certified Lactation Consultants lead virtual classes twice a month. During these 2-hour classes, prenatal families receive instruction on how to: prepare to start breastfeeding; identify infant cues for hunger and satiety, assess the adequacy of breastmilk consumed, and prevent and address common breastfeeding challenges. Prenatal families will also receive education on different latching and positioning techniques.

Online Prenatal Education Program (Yomingo)

This online, self-led prenatal course is available for pregnant women and their partner/support persons. Yomingo includes videos, tools, and articles on various topics, including: healthy pregnancy, labour and delivery, breastfeeding, newborn care, and adjustment to parenthood. This course is mobile-friendly and available in multiple languages through Google translate. Yomingo provides parents with convenient information at their fingertips, including a directory of associated local services.

“Ask a Nurse”- Healthy Families Hotline Service

Registered Nurses are available to answer questions about preconception, prenatal, and child health. The most common inquires include questions about breastfeeding, infant feeding, parenting, and growth and development. Nurses connect callers with community services and educational resources, when needed. This service is available Monday to Friday from 8:30am until 4:00 pm at 519-258-2146 ext. 1350.

Nurse Practitioner Clinic

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides primary healthcare services and mental health support for prenatal and postnatal women and children up to six years old, who do not have a primary health care provider. An Ontario Health Card is not required to receive NP services. The clinics are located at both the Windsor and Leamington WECHU sites.
